INSPIRATION: A woman who helped set up a charity for deaf, hard of hearing and deafblind people is in the running for a national award.

Alison France has been named the winner of the regional round of the Sound Barrier Star Awards.

She will now go through to the national finals of the competition run by Specsavers and Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

The 46-year-old became deaf at the age of four after suffering German measles.

She helped to launch DEAFvibe so other individuals like herself can have a place to meet and communicate, share their feelings and offer support to each other.

Alison, from Ball Green, said: "I'm very excited about the chance to be awarded the title of Sound Barrier Star 2012.

"I want to share my experiences and encourage others so they can feel as positive about their deafness as I do."

The competition aims to recognise the accomplishments of individuals with hearing loss or who are deaf.

Ten regional finalists will compete for victory in the national final on August 21.
